AMERICUS August 12, 2009 03:48 pm— In the middle of the city
of Americus, directly across
from Rees Park Economic Development Center, sits an old, historic home which
serves as Americus Garden Inn Bed & Breakfast. Though the inn itself
provides enough history and color for many hours of pleasure and
entertainment — it is what is found outdoors, directly behind the inn, that
serves as an oasis, a labyrinth for registered guests and two cats named

Dream of Spring at the Americus Garden Inn
Article by LEILA BARRETT CASE The Americus Times-Recorder, Spring
2004
You get more than a room and breakfast at Americus Garden
Inn. A warm and inviting atmosphere reigns supreme at this home away from
home located at 504 Rees Park in the heart of Americus' historic district.
In fact, innkeepers Kim and Susan Egelseer make guests feel so welcome and
comfortable with their pampered touches that they leave feeling like they've
been to "grandma's" house for a visit instead of a bed and breakfast inn.
But what else does this romantic antebellum house built in 1847 turned bed
and breakfast offer? And what makes the travelers' stay there extraordinary
and different? [ More ]

"Loved It"
I am a male business traveler with many miles behind me
having traveled from Coast to Coast and have never felt so in loved with a
place. The Americus Garden Inn was beautiful and charming and the owners
treated me like I was part of the family. The three course home cooked
breakfast was delicious and suited to my taste. The room was spacious and
the wireless high speed internet was super fast. Kim and Susan have set the
bar very high for all the other B&B across the country. I can't wait to go
back and if it doesn't happen soon enough I will make an excuse to bring my
wife for a leisure trip.

"What a Wonderful Bed and Breakfast"
Susan and Kim were the best part of the stay!! We were
celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and were welcomed with a
congratulations banner over our room! They really went out of the way to
make us feel comfortable and welcome. The home was very comfortable. The
bedroom was spacious. The breakfast was amazing!! The best part for me was
getting to spend time after breakfast hearing how Susan and Kim found
themselves in Americus, GA. It is obvious that they both love what they do
and it really shows. We've stayed at numerous B&B's across the country and
we've never felt more welcome than here. We didn't spend any time actually
in the town but Susan clued us in on all the wonderful things to do/see
around Americus. Trust us, you'll love your stay here. We would definitely
come back if we're in the area again.

"Traveling to Southwest Georgia? Don't Miss This B&B"
We visited Americus with several other friends and occupied 6
suites at the Americus Garden Inn B&B for 2 nights. We could not have been
more pleased with the experience. Kim and Susan were perfect hosts;
providing us with perfect accommodations, detailed information about area
sites and restaurants, and delicious breakfasts. If you are traveling
anywhere near Americus, Georgia do not pass up the opportunity to stay at
the Americus Garden Inn; you will be glad you did!

"Wonderful Welcome for the Weary"
We stayed at 5 B&B's during our 3 week vacation. Americus
Garden was easily Number 1 of the five. The innkeepers, Kim and Susan
Egelseer could not have been more welcoming, gracious and interesting. They
met us at the car, and helped with our bags. We got several easy directions
for dinner spots, including a map from Kim. We got a full tour of the lovely
ante-bellum mansion, and enjoyed our stay in the Scarlett O'Hara Room.
Breakfast the next morning was as beautiful as it was delicious, and
enlivened by wonderful conversation with our hosts and other guests. Worth a
divert from I-75 south of Atlanta. We will return when we go that way again.

"Great Getaway"
I
like to take family and friends to
Plains, GA. to learn about a very special man, Jimmy Carter. In the past I
have stayed at the historic hotel in Americus. Thanks to Tripadvisor this
time I stayed at Americus Garden Inn ----- and loved it! The owners, Susan
and Kim, are so delightful. Susan is a wonderful cook ---- breakfast was the
best! The house is beautiful, bed good and garden very pretty. If you enjoy
the B&B experience -- this place is a must.

"Incredible Baby Moon"
This get-away was for our second "Babymoon" and we wanted to
stay somewhere different, so we chose a B&B. We chose Americus Garden Inn
because of the excellent ratings we saw online and we were not disappointed!
Susan and Kim were incredible hosts - so warm and friendly and just made us
feel very welcome and at home from the minute we got there to the minute we
left! They pay attention to the little details - rose petals and chocolates
on the bed, a "Congratulations" banner across our bedroom door and fresh
homeade chocolate chip cookies upon our arrival (just to name a few)! The
house is amazing and everything was so clean. Our room was beautiful and we
really enjoyed the jacuzzi. We loved hearing about the history of this
beautiful home, too. Susan is also a terrific cook and even made sure that
we didn't have any dietary restrictions! We made memories that we will not
soon forget!!

"This one is a Gem"
Located between Andersonville and Plains, Ga., this bed and
breakfast is immaculate and definitely the place to be while in Americus. It
is a beautiful old southern home with a hostess who is extremely hospitable
and whose taste is discriminating. The breakfast looks like a food magazine
cover and is equally tasty!

"Awesome First Experience with Bed and Breakfast"
My sister and I recently spent a weekend at the Americus
Garden Inn and we were truly impressed with everything. We planned to visit
some of the historic sites and state parks in the area. Kim and Susan really
helped with suggestions of where to eat and events that were happening in
the area that particular weekend which led to some unexpected fun and
memories. They really became our tour guides. The food was great. The room
felt comfortable and clean. If you have never tried a bed and breakfast, let
this be your first. It was a great weekend and our thanks goes to Kim and
Susan who made us feel comfortable and very welcome.

"Treat Yourself to a Wonderful B&B..."
My daughter and husband stayed at the Americus Garden Inn,
and upon driving away, called me to say I must stop there on our planned
road trip to FL. I'm so glad we took her advice! The house and gardens are
beautiful and owner Susan, is warm, friendly and knowledgeable. I could go
on and on raving about it, but I'll just say, "Take my advice - make a

"Outstanding Accommodations for a weekend touring
Andersonville and Plains" We stayed here
for a single night after touring the Andersonville sights and before going
to Jimmy Carter's Sunday school class and seeing the other attractions in
nearby Plains. When I called for the reservation, Susan went out of her way
to provide tips for making the most out of a day in Andersonville. These
turned out to be extremely helpful, and her husband and co-host Kim provided
tips for the attractions in Plains after we checked in. We stayed in the
Scarlett suite, which was immaculately clean, plush, romantic, and
comfortable. Breakfast the next morning was yummy and filling. Susan has
perfected dozens upon dozens of special pancake recipes; the ones she was
serving that morning incorporated bits of sausage in the batter, which may
sound odd but they were just delightful. Our only regret was that we were on
a short trip and could stay only that one night. Highly recommended; these
warm yet professional hosts will take great care of you!

The Americus Garden Inn Bed and Breakfast was a great find!
My husband and I stayed there for a romantic getaway, and we were not
disappointed. Susan is a wonderful hostess; the inn was beautiful; our room
was so comfortable; everything was spotless; and, last, but not least, the
breakfast Susan made for us was one of the best I've ever had! It was a

"Great B&B in the South"
Great experience... Kim and Susan made us feel right at home from check in

wonderful. The breakfast was out of this world and Susan gave us a couple of
the blueberry muffins to go. Just stayed for one night but will remedy that
soon. Will definitely be back.

"A Wonderful B&B" Found this
place on TripAdvisor and it more than lived up to its reviews. Susan and Kim
go overboard to make sure that you have a great time. They are very
knowledgeable about the attractions in the area and will help you to plan
your side trips. Their recommendations for dinner were all on target.
Breakfast began each day with muffins and ended with pancakes. Fresh fruit
was also a part of the meal. Susan is an excellent cook and the food was
absolutely yummy. My favorite place was the breakfast room. Cold and hot
drinks were always available with homemade biscotti and fruit. The trip was
a girl's week out so my friend and I were able to spend hours getting caught
up on our busy lives in a cozy atmosphere. This was the first place on our
agenda and it was a great beginning to a wonderful week.

the best stay on our honeymoon! The owners are some of the most personable

"Americus Garden Inn-great experience"
This B&B is a charming Victorian home. The accommodations are
very comfortable and include all amenities. Our room was spacious and very
comfortable. Susan and Kim, the innkeepers, are the best. They pay attention
to every detail. They were available but not hovering. The living room area
was very comfortable and we enjoyed an after dinner visit with my sister and
her husband, who were also guests. The breakfast was fabulous--everything
homemade and great coffee. The town of Americus has many older, restored
homes; the area offers several historical sites. We were about 10 miles from
Plains, Georgia, home of former President Jimmy Carter. We will
definitely return to the Americus Garden Inn!

"One of a Kind" Susan and Kim are
excellent hosts. The "breakfast" in "bed and breakfast" takes on new meaning
in Susan's kitchen. Every morning a delicious, healthy and visually
beautiful culinary feast. (She gladly accommodated a food allergy or two, as
well). The rooms are varied one to the next (over the years I've stayed in 4
different ones) but each is decorated with exquisite taste with no sacrifice
in comfort. The setting benefits from Kim's lovely gardening and tons of
light. It's worth heading south (or north) with the Americus Garden Inn as
your destination. One of a kind, for sure.

"Best Bed and Breakfast in U.S.A" We
stayed at the Americus Garden Inn for two nights as we toured historic sites
in Georgia. The stay was PERFECT! Susan and Kim even helped us pull off a
birthday surprise for our daughter who was turning 17! Susan and Kim are
gracious hosts with a true flair for southern hospitality. Susan shared a
wealth of historic information about the B&B as well as local points of
interest. We were in 'awe' from start to finish... the Magnolia Room in
which we stayed far exceeded our expectations and there are no words to
describe the delicious breakfasts served each morning. Kim made sure it was
a peaceful environment to unwind in each evening as we enjoyed the beautiful
garden he tenderly cared for. Our stay the Americus Garden Inn was the
highlight of our tour of Georgia and a place we plan to visit annually.
Susan and Kim felt like extended family members within hours....which is the
truest measure of a quality stay.

"Romantic and Relaxing" My
husband and I wanted a romantic getaway from our busy lives. We found it at
Americus Garden Inn. We were truly treated special from the time we drove
up. Susan gave us a tour and let us know of the sites we might want to
visit. My husband loves things about the civil war so ended up going to
Andersonville Civil War Village and visiting several museums. The Garden Inn
is a beautiful house with nice rooms. Our room the Veranda had king size bed
and huge tub. It had entrance to the room from porch which we sat outside on
big rockers at night. The bed was so comfortable. We had 3 courses for
breakfast and it was delicious. Susan is the best cook and I had the best

"Incredibly Relaxing" We
just returned from Americus and a 8 day stay at the Americus Garden Inn. The
town, while very much damaged by the tornado, is managing. The purpose of
our trip was to explore my family genealogy. Days were spent driving to and
from small towns and libraries. The Americus Garden Inn was like coming home
ever day. We stayed in the Veranda room and it was spacious and comfortable.
The bed was divine. In our experience b&bs can be noisy. Not so here - very
quiet. The hosts are superlative, so good natured and informative AND then
there are the breakfasts -- beyond scrumptious. We loved one of the quiches
Susan made so lo and behold on our last day she made it specially for us.
YUMMY!!! The Inn is very much a respite and anyone wanting a break should

"Better Than Excellent" Excellent
does not adequately describe the facility, hospitality and value of Americus
Garden Inn. Surely, this is one of the very best B & Bs in the nation. Our
hosts, Kim and Susan, welcomed us into their historic home (built in 1847)
with a warmth and graciousness befitting family. The large, comfortable
rooms were spotless and well furnished, and breakfasts exceeded our
expectations. Susan is a grandma trained, gourmet cook; you will not leave
the table unsatisfied. The surrounding area of Americus, Plains and
Andersonville afford visitors to the area a variety of activities but
Americus Garden Inn made our weekend visit most memorable.

healthy and filling breakfasts were an unbelievable start to sight seeing
days. Then incredibly warm colors and cozy decor gave way to relaxing baths

like a B&B - and we have been to many!!!!!!! It felt like home and I think
our hosts should be thanked appropriately. There was no detail overlooked

"Awesome Retreat after a long days work" I

Susan and Kim make my visits very enjoyable and their hospitality is

to the time that I can be in Americus to spend my evenings in a beautifully
decorated room, very comfortable living quarters, a lovely covered porch
where you can relax and enjoy the birds singing, and the best breakfasts in

and muffins, and tops off the rest of the meal with her out of this world
pancakes and quiches. The Inn is top notch and would make anyone who stays

"Most Wonderful B&B Ever"
I just returned from a semi-annual weekend
"girl's" trip to Americus, GA with 3 of my lifetime friends. We call
ourselves the "Nutty Buddies." The primary purpose of our trip was to visit
President Jimmy Carter's church and attend the Sunday School class that he
taught. I searched the internet for lodging in the area and decided on the
Americus Garden Inn. Seeing the Carters was great and President Carter is a
wonderful Sunday school teacher. But the best part of the trip was actually
our stay at the Americus Garden Inn Bed & Breakfast. The owners, Kim and
Susan Egelseer, are truly blessed with a special gift of making one feel
welcome and special. From being greeted in the driveway, to all the special
touches throughout the house, the scrumptious breakfasts.......I could go on
and on.
Our only regret was that we didn't get to spend more time just enjoying the
ambience of the Inn itself and less time out seeing the sights.
I recommend the Americus Garden Inn over any other bed and breakfast in
which I have stayed. It is great for a girl's getaway, like we had, or a
romantic weekend for you and that special person in your life.

"Our First Stay At a B&B"
While planning a trip to Columbus, Georgia, to attend the
graduation ceremony of our grandson from basic training at Fort Benning, we
decided to incorporate a long planned visit to Plains. We had read Jimmy
Carter’s book, An Hour Before Daylight, found it so descriptive of life
there that we wanted to see it for ourselves.
Americus, Georgia, near Plains, appeared to be a convenient place to stay,
with the added advantage of being within a short distance of another
historic site, Andersonville and the Prisoner of War Museum, another long
planned visit.
So, where to stay in Americus?
A search on the internet turned up the usual motels. But then we had an
idea. We had never stayed at a Bed and Breakfast. Certainly in a town whose
roots were deep in the antebellum South there must be some place, some
house, that would give us a sense of time and place. And we found it. The
minute we saw the photograph of Americus Garden Inn, a large Romantic
Victorian house with Italianate embellishments we knew that was where we
wanted to stay. We booked three nights during the first weekend in
December—Saturday through Monday.
On Saturday afternoon we visited Andersonville and on Sunday we attended the
Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, listened to Jimmy Carter teach a Sunday
school class, stayed for the church service and had our picture taken with
the Carters. We toured the Carter farm in the afternoon. Added attractions
were the Rural Telephone Museum at Leslie and the Global Village at Habitat
for Humanity in Americus.
What made this mini vacation so excellent was the fact that we had chosen
the Americus Garden Inn as our operational base. Innkeepers Susan and Kim
Egelseer are very caring hosts. We were thoroughly briefed on local
restaurants, places we wanted to visit, shown the best routes to get where
we wanted to go, served three wonderful gourmet breakfasts—no two alike—had
elegant accommodations and were made to feel comfortably at home in the cozy
Veranda Suite.
In retrospect our stay was too short to take advantage of all the amenities
offered such as the Inn’s extensive VHS tape collection, or simply spending
a quiet afternoon reading in the living room and listening to the baby grand
piano that plays a concert all by itself. A walking tour of nearby historic
homes, had the weather been more suitable, could have added to our pleasure,
and spending a tranquil evening on the veranda overlooking Rees Park under a
southern moon would have been unforgettable. If there is a more congenial
B&B it’s probably on another planet.

expected such unique but delicious courses. We definitely will recommend

family members for Christmas presents. We are eager to return in the near

"An Anniversary Getaway" Two wonderful nights with sightseeing jaunts to
Jimmy Carter's Plains, Ga., and to Andersonville, that terrible monument to
the horrors of war. Breakfasts were absolutely terrific, and ample
refreshments were out for taking 24 hours. Hosts Kim and Susan obviously are
devoting their significant labor and tremendous love on this inn. Kim's
knowledge and help with area dining spots and historical sites was truly
outstanding, and Susan works hard to deliver unique dishes. We were
impressed with the many, many area reference pieces available at the inn.

and which ones are more commercial type places. Susan's angel biscuits and
oatmeal cookie pancakes are worth the trip alone. My husband and I left here
feeling very rested and relaxed. Ours days were spent out and about but
nights we just kicked back and relaxed at the inn in the evenings. We bird
watched, fed the fish in the pond, loved on Simon (the cat) and were

very concerned that each person who stays at their B&B is relaxed and happy!
We stayed 2 nights, 1 in The Library room and the next in the Jacuzzi Room
with the added Sensations Package. The first day after hours of touring
nearby historical Andersonville and shopping at the Maze (fun store that has
everything and more!) in downtown Americus and strolling along the quaint
streets enjoying southern hospitality, we were ready for some R&R at the
B&B... We picked out a couple movies from the extensive collection of videos
available for all guests to use and then to the dining room which is always
stocked full of every kind of soda, ice water, tea and coffee 24 hours a
day. The weekend we were there, Susan's delicious double chocolate biscotti
was the perfect touch to dip in our coffee. The biscotti awaited guests who
needed a snack along with apples or bananas. Saturday morning the breakfast
was wonderful. We began with some nummy chocolate muffins with our choice of
several juices and of course, coffee! The next course was deliciously sweet
melon followed by an egg casserole with our favorite; Cinnamon Roll Griddle
Cakes! Wow! After breakfast, we left for another day of history in near by
Plains and enjoyed the history of our 39th President, Jimmy Carter and his
family. Southern hospitality was A+ again as shop keepers greeted us and
treated us to their specialties. We found a couple treasures in the Antique
shop and also enjoyed peanut treats in one of the shops. Had the best
homemade soup ever at the little diner that used to be a bank...try the
Chicken and Dumpling. It was perfect on the damp, rainy day we were there.
Again, we returned needing rest from our day. Susan graciously showed us to
our new room. Ahhh! The Jacuzzi room! Our Sensations package included
wonderful cottony silk sheets, robes to warm us after the jacuzzi, a great
basket full of spa goodies (lotions, shampoo, etc.) and even Rubber Ducky
and family to float in the tub! We truly felt like honeymooners again! The
next day we enjoyed yet another fabulous breakfast and strolled around the
neighborhood to take in the beauty of historical Victorian homes and just
imaging Rhett and Scarlett types back when...such character and beauty in
the older homes. After getting photographs of our host and hostess, we were
on our way back to reality. Kim and Susan just made our whole weekend
special. Such a value too! Hoping to return someday and will highly
recommend to anyone who needs a getaway or just a stop along the way...great
hospitality, romance and delicious food and 5-star treatment await all who
visit the Americus Garden Inn!

"A True home away from Home" My job requires that I spend more nights in a hotel
room than I do my own. In the seven years that I have been traveling,
I have never been treated so well. This pre Civil War home is very
beautiful and Kim and Susan do everything in their power to make the guest
feel like they have come home. The Americus Garden Inn was my first
experience with a B & B and I don't think the experience could have been any
better. I was lucky enough to be a weekly guest from April 2004 to
January 2005. Can't wait to go back to my "Georgia Home".

"A Must Visit" We have just returned from our weekend stay at the
Americus Garden Inn. The Inn is beautiful. The innkeepers, Kim and Susan,
are wonderful. They welcome you into the Inn and make you feel at home. The
food is wonderful. Susan bakes like a master. It is impossible to leave the
breakfast table hungry. My husband and I went there to "get away from it
all" for our anniversary. We were able to relax, be alone, celebrate, and
make new friends in the process. We will definitely go back.

"Perfect Ending" Our stay at Americus Garden Inn was the perfect
ending to our long weekend road trip escape from the children. The room was
beautiful and clean. The entire house was breath taking. We wanted for
nothing. Susan and Kim were so friendly and warm. Breakfast was so
delicious. The snacks available were a nice perk. The tag line "where
history meets romance" is a perfect description. Susan and Kim have spoiled
us for all B&Bs to come. We will definitely be returning.

"A Fantastic Experience" We had planned a weekend to visit historic sites and
hear Jimmy Carter teach Sunday School. To our surprise, the weekend
turned out to be one of the most delightful experiences we have had
all because of our accommodations at the Americus Garden Inn. The
snooze in the sun on our balcony, the never ending delicious coffee,
the beautifully furnished rooms, the cucumber soak in the garden
tub, the delicious breakfast, the always available homemade snacks,
the books, movies, and the gracious hospitality of Kim and Susan
ranks Americus Garden Inn at the top of our B&B experiences. We
keenly anticipate our next visit just to enjoy the Inn.

"Welcome Home!" A family reunion brought me to this part of Georgia,
but you can bet I will find other reasons to return. "Relax", is
what this inn says, which I did, as a working mother of two very
active girls. They remained at home with Dad so I was solo for three
lovely nights...without anyone to drive, feed, clothe or assist with
homework. Now, I brought work with me, and I actually spent one
evening catching up on some neglected reports, but I still felt that
it was a vacation from responsibility. The food was healthy,
scrumptious, and plentiful. The room was inviting, comfortable and
spacious. I felt at home as soon as I arrived. The tall ceilings and
the large spaces made for a wonderfully free feeling. Everything
inside the house gleamed and I never felt for want of anything. Kim
was patient enough to help me establish the proper connections on my
laptop so that I could use the wireless internet connection. Bless
him...he also answered countless questions about restaurants,
routes, and places to sightsee. I felt even more pampered when Susan
insisted that I choose from among many options for breakfast. When I
returned home, my husband and the kids were happy to see me and I
felt refreshed...a perfect way to start a new week.
